AT&T requires the data plan with the iPhone. It's part of the contract if you buy from AT&T/Apple/Best Buy/Walmart and get the discounted price. If you buy it elsewhere, the data plan will be added to your bill as soon as the network detects that you're using an iPhone.

If all you want is wifi, get an iTouch and a cheaper phone.

1. No pre-order will be done through Apple. If your an AT&T customer with an iPhone already? Rumors say maybe through AT&T's website. I would still plan on waiting in line.

2. Apple store is the obvious. I would call a AT&T store near you and ask if they will have iPhone 3G's on the day of the launch. But the Apple Store is pretty much your best option either a mall or stand alone.

3. Most AT&T stores I've seen are open 9am - 8pm M-F and Apples stores 10am - 8pm. If they are in a mall, these times can depend when the mall opens.

4. Sure the iPhone can be jailbroken and unlocked. But what's the point? 1) You have to sign a contract with AT&T before leaving the store. 2) If you cancel the contract you have to return the phone or face a penalty. So basically you can jailbreak and unlock the phone you would have to carry the AT&T contract with your t-mobile one... why pay for 2 plans though? The only way to maybe get an unlocked one will be to order them from overseas where they will get unlocked iPhones because of the various european deals that Apple made not requiring exclusivity.

Good luck!

babygrlxoxo: Just so your not disappointed when you go get one.

1.calll up the atandt store or apple store and ask to pre order it. (Uhh no. They said. No pre order because with iPhone 3G you are required to sign a 2 year agreement. They don't want people Jailbreaking and unlocking the phone like with the current model. So no pre order through Apple.)
2.online (See above)
3.just order it online so you dont need to fin out the store hours (See above)
4.no there will be secirutty gards (I hope your joking. Jailbreaking is "hacking" your phone to allow your iPhone to download and use native 3rd party programs. Unlocking is making the phone able to use on other GSM networks. Namely t-mobile in the U.S.)

If you dont believe me, or choose to believe your friend google iPhone or search any tech website. To save you time try Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/5016398/the-iphone-3g-faq

The one thing I can say for certain is this. You are required to have the 30.00 iPhone data package which provides you with unlimited internet. When you check your email, covered. When you download applications, covered. If you have the application for GPS, internet is needed as a means to give you updated and correct information, covered.

As far as applications go...get bubblewrap It is boring, mindless and mundane but c'mon WHO doesn't like popping the bubble wrap, eh? and the internet needed to download it. covered by the package

Unlimited data is required to operate the iPhone and starts at $20 a month. This plan comes with 200 txts but you can add additional through iTunes when you activate the phone. The smallest potential base rate plan for the iPhone is $60, but if you need more than 200 txts, that will increase. The smallest model runs $399 currently, and there will be a standard $18 upgrade fee that will come on your first bill. I strongly encourage you to look into the iPhone before you purchase it, it is the most returned phone in cell phone history after all. I won't go into detail as you asked specifically only for this information. Hope it was helpful!
