No CommentLaptops being mobile devices are susceptible to all sorts of security-related attacks. We bring them with us to the office, the Wi-Fi enabled coffee shop, the park or just about anywhere. Important data such as login credentials to various sites, important files, e-mail etc. are exposed to external elements. Since we use them outside the secured environment of our homes, it is important that we do what we can to make sure that we keep sensitive information away from prying eyes. Let us discuss some ways to increase the security of your laptop.
Secure your screen
A problem I have when I am using my laptop parts in public such as in a coffee shop is that my screen is visible to other people. Someone seated close to me can read my e-mail along with me or look when I am about to enter my login credentials to various sites. One way to prevent people from looking over your shoulder to snoop is to secure your screen with a security filter. These security filters work by making the screen appear dark or blank at certain angles. Be careful though when choosing security filters because some have very sticky surfaces that leave marks on the screen. Filters made by 3M are detachable and do not leave any mark when you remove them.
Automate your login to sites (and still remain secured)
If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox, you can install the RoboForm accelerator, which stores all your usernames and passwords for sites in a secured environment. It works by saving then login information of sites you visit in a file. This file is then encrypted using a variety of techniques depending on what you choose. On top of that, a master password is required to add another level of security just in case your laptop gets stolen or something similar. The next time you want to visit the site stored in RoboForm, all you have to do is select it from the menu and it will load the site with your credentials already inserted.
With these tips, any user can add an extra layer of security to make surfing in public more secure.
