Can you get a smartphone without a smartphone plan at Alltel now that Alltel is basically Verizon?
I am somewhat planning to buy a smartphone on eBay or at retail pricing and then activating it on my basic plan. Is this possible now? Will it remain possible once Alltel becomes Verizon? How do I do this, just buy the phone, activate it online/over phone?

ya, so does everyone else. unfortunately Verizon likes to screw people and say you don't need it, then poof, its on the bill. then when you call them and ask, they say it is REQUIRED for the phone, even though it is not, they just want more money.

wifi is a phone feature, it should work without any data plan. Data plans are more for email, web surfing etc. Use a wifi hotspot or unsecure network and surf away.

I don't think your going to have many options with the restrictions that you have placed. Most of the devices that I have looked at you will be using if you want a desktop based option.
I would give the Palm Treo's a second look. If you stick to a PalmOS based Treo you won't have any learning curve to learn to use it, and they use Palm Desktop. I don't know who your cellular provider is, but the Centro (Sprint) looks very nice, and the Treo 680 is also a very nice smartphone, although some people add an extended battery.
I have a Treo 650, and would purchase another one. The only gripe I have about the palm phone don't get high speed internet access, but this is a limitation of the OS, not the device itself.

I'm thinking it's your service providor? if it's verizon then call them , are you sure you have a "text feature" on your cell phone plan? you should have unlimited texting as it's cheap. So start with your carrier. .

alltel customer's are staying on alltel plans until they decide to upgrade their plans, at which point they will have to change to a verizon nationwide plan. all smartphones do require a data plan, which start at $29.99.

They usually come really well packaged up. They don't just put the phone in a box and let it roll around in there until you get it. It'll come in it's own box which is put in another box for shipping. The phone won't be able to move around in there. No worries, you're phone will work just fine and it'll last!
